چکیده

Experimental measurements are presented for sub-scale ion optics systems comprised of 7 and 19 aperture pairs with geometrical features that are similar to the HiPEP ion optics system under development within NASA's Project Prometheus. Effects of hole diameter and grid-to-grid spacing are presented as functions of applied voltage and beamlet current. Recommendations are made for the beamlet current range where the ion optics system can be safely operated without experiencing direct impingement of high energy ions on the accelerator grid surface. Measurements are also presented of the accelerator grid voltage where beam plasma electrons backstream through the ion optics system. Results of numerical simulations obtained with the ffx code are compared to both the impingement limit and backstreaming measurements. An emphasis is placed on identifying differences between measurements and simulation predictions to highlight areas where more research is needed. Relatively large effects are observed in simulations when the discharge chamber plasma properties and ion optics geometry are varied. Parameters investigated using simulations include the applied voltages, grid spacing, hole-to-hole spacing, doubles-tosingles ratio, plasma potential, and electron temperature; and estimates are provided for the sensitivity of impingement limits on these parameters.

Electric Field Breakdown Characteristics of Carbon-based Ion Optics

Ion thrusters are being designed for long-term operation at power, specific impulse, and thrust levels of up to 29 kW, 7000 seconds, and 0.64 N, respectively. The total propellant throughput goal of these thrusters is nearly 100 kg/kW, which corresponds to ~100 khr of operation. Carbon-based grids have been chosen as the baseline design to achieve this propellant throughput and life time goal. ...

Performance Evaluation of 8-cm Diameter Ion Optics Assemblies Fabricated from Carbon-Carbon Composites

Performance data collected on two sets of 8-cm diameter carbon-carbon (C-C) ion optics assemblies are presented in this paper. Each C-C grid was designed and fabricated to grid feature geometries that were identical to the NSTAR ion engine and their performance was characterized by mounting them to an 8-cm diameter Structurally Integrated Thruster (SIT-8). Electron backstreaming and impingement...

Numerical Simulation of HiPEP Ion Optics

The ffx code was used to investigate the lifetime and propellant throughput capability of the High Power Electric Propulsion (HiPEP) thruster ion optics as part of NASA’s Project Prometheus. Erosion predictions are presented as a function of beamlet current, accel grid voltage, and propellant utilization efficiency. These predictions were then compared to the lifetime goals of the thruster, and...

Experimental Evaluation of Sub-scale Cbio Ion Optics Systems

An experimental study of a sub-scale carbon-based ion optics (CBIO) design proposed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is described. Perveance and crossover beamlet current limits, above and below which accelerator grid direct impingement currents rise, are documented over wide throttling ranges. Test data reported for assemblies with 1, 7, 19, and 37 aperture pairs suggest that gridlets co...

Dynamical evolution of nonclassical properties in cavity quantum electrodynamics with a single trapped ion

In this paper, by considering a system consisting of a single two-level trapped ion interacting with a single-mode quantized radiation field inside a lossless cavity, the temporal evolution of the ionic and the cavity-field quantum statistical properties including photon-counting statistics, quantum fluctuations of the field quadratures and quantum fluctuations of the ionic dipole variables are...
